David is a board member of the Canadian Biblical Counselling Coalition, the Director of the Graduate Certificate Of Biblical Care at Heritage College and Seminary as well as an adjunct professor. He also lectures in various countries such as Mongolia and Cuba for Carey International Pastoral Training. David is married and has three grown children.

David's testimony:

I grew up in a Christian home with 2 brothers and 1 sister.
My father was a pastor and my mother stayed home to care for us. As I grew, it became very clear to me that I was a sinner and God was angry with my sin.
Being young I did not know my sin well but I knew I could not come before God on my own. But I had also been taught a lot about Jesus and His welcoming goodness- he alone saves. I remember on numerous nights I would be praying to God that he would not send me to hell but would save me, along with my siblings.
Over time I began to understand more about the love and welcome of Jesus and so my fears became less about hell and more of Christ - his life, death and resurrection.
By God’s grace alone, he made a dead heart live and by God’s grace alone, I live and serve him in all my weakness and remaining heart battles.

What inspired you to promote this type of counseling? What motivates you to do biblical counseling?

What inspired me was first, after coming out of seminary and entering my first pastorate, I realized how inadequate I was to sit with people and care for them Biblically. I had not been taught well. Second, so many people are hurting, so many marriages suffering, so many tears present, so many questions about life are being asked. Third Jesus ministered so well to people. He never compromised truth or holiness and the hurting and hopeless, sinners and suffers came into his presence. Jesus was the ultimate counsellor.
So what motivate me is the gospel, grace and the example of Jesus. What inspired me to promote this type of counselling is the high view of Scripture, an astonishment of the healing power of the fullness of the gospel and the love God has for me through Christ which in turn fills the heart to reach out in mercy and truth to the hurting. Jesus is the great shepherd and we have a small opportunity to be His instruments in people’s lives.
